French rock icon Catherine Ringer dies at 68

She was born into tragedy and turned it into art. The daughter of a Holocaust survivor, Catherine Ringer carried her father’s scars into song, giving him immortality in “C’était un homme.” When she met guitarist Fred Chichin, their love story exploded into Les Rita Mitsouko, a band that refused every box: rock, funk, chanson, electronics, theatre. Her voice could sneer, laugh, weep, sometimes all in a single line.

Losing Fred to cancer in 2007 nearly silenced her, but she clawed her way back, album by album, concert by concert, transforming grief into performance. Every anniversary of his death left her drained, yet she still stepped on stage, still fought for women’s rights and the planet, still insisted life was made of “ups and downs.” Now France stands in that down, candles lit, Marcia Baïla echoing, holding on to the freedom she taught it to sing.
