That gorgeous orange yolk could be costing you more for the wrong reason. You’ve trusted its rich color as proof of a better egg, but the story behind that glow is far less simple than it looks. Before you pay extra for another carton, there’s something about what hens eat that could completely change your next grocery shopping deci

An egg’s yolk gets much of its color from pigments in a hen’s feed, especially carotenoids. Grass, alfalfa, and marigold petals can deepen that shade, while feed additives can produce a similar result. A golden center may look irresistible, but it cannot establish an egg’s overall nutritional quality. Pale yolks are not automatically inferior, and orange ones do not guarantee healthier hens or better farming conditions. Color offers a clue about diet, not a complete verdict.

Eggs of either shade can supply protein, vitamin B12, vitamin D, selenium, and choline, although nutrient levels can vary. When choosing a carton, consider reliable information about production practices alongside freshness, proper storage, and safe handling. These details deserve more attention than appearance alone. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying a richly colored yolk; just don’t mistake its beauty for a nutritional promise. You can appreciate what’s on your plate without letting color dictate what you pay.
