Discovered in a 1907 home. Can you figure out what it is?

It looked like scrap metal, but it belonged at the heart of a home. Before disposable containers crowded our cupboards, this strange, spiked kitchen tool stood beside generations of working hands, quietly serving a purpose many people have forgotten. Look closer, and its simple design opens a door to warm kitchens, shared chores, and an almost vanished family trad

The object is a vintage bottle drying rack, also called a bottle tree or, in French, a hérisson. Its metal prongs held washed glass bottles upside down, allowing water to drain and air to circulate inside. In households where bottles were repeatedly reused, that straightforward design made an everyday task easier. There was nothing extravagant about it: just a durable tool built around the practical needs of people who took care of what they owned.

Today, surviving racks sometimes hold mugs or become decorative displays, their original purpose no longer obvious. Yet their appeal reaches beyond rustic style. They remind us of household routines passed between generations, of children helping with chores, and of useful objects kept rather than casually discarded. Not every old kitchen was idyllic, but these racks preserve something worth remembering: reuse was an everyday habit, and even an ordinary chore could become part of a family’s shared history.
