My Husband Lied That His Boss Wouldn’t Give Him Paternity Leave — I Gasped When I Found Out the Truth

I was so excited about becoming a mother, and I had always imagined that my husband, Daniel, would be right beside me during those first precious weeks with our baby. Before the delivery, we discussed taking maternity and paternity leave together so he could help me recover and take care of our newborn. I wasn’t expecting him to do everything, but I desperately wanted his support during such an important moment in our lives.

However, one evening, Daniel came home with some terrible news. He claimed he had spoken to his boss, who refused to approve his paternity leave because the company was handling an important project. He also told me that he might lose his job if he refused to travel to another city for several months. I was devastated, but we depended on his income, especially since I would be unable to work for a while after giving birth. I swallowed my disappointment and told him we would somehow manage.

A few days later, I went grocery shopping and unexpectedly ran into his boss’s wife, Rebecca, whom I had known since university. After exchanging greetings, she asked how my pregnancy was going and whether Daniel was excited about becoming a father. I couldn’t hide my frustration anymore. I told her that things would have been much easier if her husband had allowed Daniel to take paternity leave instead of sending him away for months. Rebecca stared at me in confusion before responding, “What are you talking about? Your husband has already been approved for paternity leave. My husband even mentioned how happy he was for him!”

I felt the blood drain from my face. I tried to smile and pretend everything was fine, but my mind was racing. Why would Daniel lie about something so important? I hurried home, and when I arrived, he was taking a shower. His phone was lying on the living room table. I knew checking it was wrong, but something inside me told me that I needed to find out the truth. I picked it up, expecting to discover another woman or perhaps some hidden financial problem. Instead, I opened a conversation that completely shattered my heart.

The messages were between Daniel and his younger brother, Mark. One message from Daniel read, “I’ve told her the company refused my leave. She believes me. I need those few months away because I cannot have her discovering what happened before the baby arrives.” Mark replied, “You can’t keep hiding this forever. She’s your wife, and she deserves to know the truth.” My hands began trembling as I scrolled further down. Then I found a message that made me feel physically sick: “The baby might not even be mine. I need to find out before I make a decision about staying in this marriage.”

Just then, Daniel walked out of the bathroom and found me holding his phone. His expression changed immediately. He asked what I was doing, but I simply turned the screen toward him and demanded an explanation. At first, he tried to deny everything, but when I mentioned the messages, he went silent. Finally, he admitted that he had been secretly questioning whether the baby was his because of a conversation he had overheard between me and an old university friend. He had misunderstood a joke we had made months earlier and allowed his imagination to convince him that I had been unfaithful.

I was heartbroken. Instead of talking to me like a husband, he had chosen to lie, secretly investigate my past, and make me believe his job was in danger. He then confessed that he had been planning to travel to another city to meet someone who claimed to have information about my previous relationship. I couldn’t believe he had allowed suspicion to destroy the happiness we should have been sharing as we prepared to welcome our child. I told him that if he had doubts, he should have spoken to me instead of treating me like a stranger. I also made it clear that a paternity test was possible, but trust would be much harder to rebuild.

The following morning, Daniel apologized and begged me not to leave him. He promised to take his approved paternity leave, attend the baby’s birth, and prove that he could be the husband and father I deserved. I agreed that we needed to establish the truth, but I refused to pretend nothing had happened. When our baby arrived, Daniel was present, and we eventually arranged a paternity test. The results confirmed that he was the father. Although he was relieved, I couldn’t forget how easily he had doubted me and lied during one of the most vulnerable periods of my life. I had expected my husband to stand beside me when our child was born, but I never imagined I would have to fight so hard just to get the truth from him.
