This morning, I woke up and decided to make fried eggs.

My breakfast stopped cold when I spotted a twisted white strand floating inside an egg. Convinced it might be something dangerous, I checked the rest of the carton, but finding nothing unusual only deepened my unease. Before throwing everything away, I searched for answers and discovered that the thing I feared most had an unexpected explanation behind its

The strange cord had a name: the chalaza. Made largely of protein, these twisted strands help hold the yolk near the center of the egg, acting like tiny anchors on either side. They are normal, edible, and sometimes more noticeable in fresher eggs. Their visibility varies, which explains why one egg might catch your attention while another does not. What looked alarming in my bowl was simply part of the egg’s natural structure—not a parasite.

Relief replaced disgust, but there was an important distinction: a chalaza does not guarantee an egg is safe. Proper refrigeration, careful handling, and thorough cooking still matter, and eggs with cracked shells or an unpleasant odor should be discarded. There is no need to remove the strand unless a delicate recipe calls for an especially smooth texture. I had nearly thrown away breakfast over something harmless. Next time, I would recognize it instead of panicking
